Decking prices explained

Last reviewed

We don't publish prices, because York gardens vary so much. This page explains what tends to push a price up or down.

In brief

The price of a deck in York depends on its size, height and boards, and often on access. Bringing materials through a terraced house takes longer. Hardwood and composite cost more than softwood. Raised decks, balustrades, lighting and heritage-sensitive detailing add to it. We give an quote after a free visit.

Access

The biggest York-specific factor. On a terrace with no side access, every board, joist and bag of concrete comes through the house or along a ginnel. It takes more time and care.

Boards

Treated softwood is cheapest to buy, composite costs more and hardwood is usually at the top. For period homes, hardwood is often the preferred look.

Height and shape

Low decks on level ground are simplest. Raised decks need taller posts, bracing, steps and guarding. Built-in benches and planters add joinery time.

Heritage detailing

Keeping a deck clear of old walls, adding a gravel strip, painting a timber balustrade in a heritage colour: these details take a little longer but protect the house and suit it better.

Ground

Removing an old deck or patio, and dealing with roots from mature trees, adds time.

Common questions

Does narrow access add to the cost?

It adds time, so yes, a little. We plan for it at the visit and include it in the quote rather than surprise you later.

Do conservation-area decks cost more?

Not necessarily. Costs depend on the materials and design. Any time spent on drawings for an application would be explained in advance.
